Thruxton BSB: Ryde wins as Currie takes Supersport honours

Kyle Ryde stole victory in this afternoon’s Supersport slipstream war as he took the overall win, while Ben Currie bagged maximum points in the Dickies British Supersport title race.

The former World championship regular put the RS Racing Kalex on top of the box after beating team-mate Josh Owens in a last-lap dash for GP2 class honours and outright glory.

But it was James Westmoreland who stormed into the lead as he grabbed the holeshot from the middle of the front row, leading Ryde and pole-sitter Owens as the pack headed out into the Hampshire countryside.

Ryde took over at the front as they began the second lap, but Westmoreland’s charge was over after his bike suffered a technical problem, leaving Owens to slot into second ahead of James Rispoli.

But Rispoli was soon shoved aside as Currie came through the pack to begin the slipstream battle, levering Owens aside moments later to tuck in just behind Ryde.

The pack bunched up as Jamie Perrin and Jack Kennedy joined the fight to make a six-bike scrap for top honours, with Brands Hatch Supersport David Allingham and Sam Wilford closing in.

With three to go, RS Racing’s Owens powered past Ryde exiting Church and beat him on the brakes into the next corner, but Ryde was straight back into the lead as they began the penultimate lap.

And the 2014 National Superstock 600 champion kept his Kalex compatriot at bay as he beat Owens to the overall win by 0.17s, with Gearlink Kawasaki’s Currie taking maximum championship points as he took the flag half a second off the overall win in third.

Integro Yamaha’s Kennedy and American Rispoli joined Currie on the Supersport podium in second and third, respectively.
