Alex Marquez explains his Czech Grand Prix crash

Gold & Goose

Alex Marquez revealed that he was not attempting to overtake Joan Mir when he crashed and took out his fellow Spaniard.

In the Czech Republic Grand Prix, Alex Marquez crashed out of the race in the early laps and took down Joan Mir after making a mistake.

The Spaniard was forced to make up ground in the early stages of the 21-lap Grand Prix after qualifying in eighth place on the grid.

However, as he was trying to make his way through the field and to the front group, he made a failed overtake on Joan Mir at Turn 12 on lap two and went down, taking Mir with him.

After the race, Marquez explained his actions and stated that he was not trying to overtake Mir, but instead, he was calculating a move on his compatriot for the next lap.

"When you do a mistake, you need to accept everything," Alex Marquez told MotoGP.com after the race in Czechia.

"I was just trying to calculate the move for the next lap, so I was trying to go halfway. I went too deep and I lost the front, causing his crash.

"I am sorry to him and his team.

"We created that situation by a mistake in qualifying, starting from the back. This is a weekend which must give us experience for the future. When we start at the back, we need to be calm.

"It’s true that we aren’t used to starting from the back positions. Today I didn’t [do things] in the right moments.

"Sorry. We need to move on, and come back in Austria in a better way."

This is the younger Marquez brother's third DNF in a Grand Prix this season after previously crashing at Assen and Le Mans.

After 12 rounds of the 2025 MotoGP World Championship, he remains in second place in the standings, but is now 120 points behind his brother, who dominated the weekend at Brno.
