'Alex Marquez turned in on top of me' - Miller's home Grand Prix was impacted after contact on lap one

Gold and Goose

Jack Miller's home Grand Prix got off to a poor start after contact at the first corner left him in last place.

At the Australian Grand Prix, there is always a lot of hype around Jack Miller. The Australian has won a Grand Prix in his home nation and has stood on the podium in a MotoGP race at Phillip Island.

After Miller stated 'anything is possible' on Thursday hopes were high for a Miller podium on Sunday. However, the Australians Grand Prix hopes were over before the race had properly got going.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider got off to a great start after the lights went out. But at the first corner, contact with another rider sent Miller off the track and caused him to restart in last place. The #43 got back to work and made his way back through the pack before finishing in 11th place.

After the race, Miller could tell he could have had a better result on Sunday if not for his turn-one contact.

"We got a mega jump from the inside there and I reckon we would have been in the top six by turn one," Miller stated.

"I was on the curb on the inside following it around and then Alex (Marquez) turned in on top of me. Then we were hooked and we were off at turn one, fortunately, we became unhooked once we came off the track.

"Rejoining in last position and starting the race from there, we were able to pick off many people and were inside the top ten for a bit. I was really trying to just do the best I could and not get over excited and smoke the tyre. But I was also trying to make up some ground when I could. So, a good race and decent pace, it just makes things difficult when you have a moment like that so early on."
