MotoGP's spec-tyre supplier Bridgestone will take a softer rear tyre to four races after Germany following consultation with riders and series owners Dorna in an effort to halt the rising number of crashes.
Following a meeting of the safety commission on Friday night where riders talked about the problems of getting heat into the hard compound tyres, and agreement was reached to bring a softer spec rear tyre which will warm-up faster and reduce the risk of cold-tyre highsides which have plagued the series this year.
"The races that we will bring these to are Laguna Seca, Brno, Aragon and potentially Motegi, although this is not confirmed yet because they have resurfaced the track and we are using this weekend's Japan Superbike race there to assess the new surface and its demands on tyres," said Bridgestone's Tom Tremayne, speaking to bikesportnews.com this morning.
"We have made this proposal in light of what the riders have been asking for. Back in 2009, we were asked to provide two tyre options both of which would be suitable for the race so that there wasn't a clear favourite from the start of the weekend. Now, with the riders happy to sacrifice race-distance consistency for improved warm-up performance, we are revising our compound allocation at some races in response to this."
