'Bringing the Aprilia to fight for the championship won't be easy' - Martin rules himself out of the 2025 title fight

Gold & Goose

Jorge Martin does not believe he can fight for the MotoGP title with Aprilia until 2026.

After winning the 2024 MotoGP World Championship with Ducati, Jorge Martin will take on a new challenge this season.

The Spaniard decided to switch manufacturers for the 2025 season as he signed with Aprilia midway through the 2024 season. However, this move will see Martin go from competing on the best bike in MotoGP to an average MotoGP machine.

In 2024 Aprilia won a race and their best rider was Maverick Vinales who ended the season in seventh. This was a clear step backwards from their 2023 performances with Aleix Espargaro and Vinales.

On the Tengo Un Plan podcast, Martin discussed his move to Aprilia and his aims for the 2025 season. The reigning MotoGP Champion started off by explaining the situation that he is in now that he has left Ducati for Aprilia.

"If I had continued with Ducati, the goal would've been the same, which is to give it my all and aim for success," Martin explained.

"But now I have no idea because I don't know what the bike will be like. The challenge is huge since I'm getting on a low-top-ten bike while leaving one from the top position.

"If I were to start from fifth place and finish by winning races or getting a second, I'd be very proud. The important thing, however, is to progress."

Martin does not believe he will be able to replicate what Valentino Rossi did in 2004 when he won back-to-back titles with different manufacturers. Instead, he does not think he will fight for titles with Aprilia until 2026 at the earliest.

"Bringing the Aprilia to fight for the championship won't be easy," Martin stated.

"So, the ambition for the new season isn't that. The opportunity could present itself maybe as early as 2026 but, for now, I just have to try to do my best."
