Britain’s Leon Camier will finally get to make his MotoGP debut at Indianapolis as he stands in for the injured Nicky Hayden for two races after the American underwent further surgery on his troublesome wrist.
Camier has been employed as the Drive M7 Honda stand-in rider since Hayden’s last surgery several weeks ago but the new operation to give the former world champion has sidelined him for at least four races.
Camier will start his tenure in at Hayden’s home round - a track he has never seen before - but will have his long-term crew chief Frankie Carchedi with him in the garage as he already works for Hayden.
“Obviously, this is a massive honour for me and it’s a shame it has to come at Nicky’s expense but I intend to grab it with both hands and hit the ground running straight away,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
“The carbon brakes and Bridgestones will take some work but I want to get adapted to those as fast as I possibly can. There are no targets for the first round but it would be nice to be able to finish somewhere near to Hiro (Aoyama) and Scott Redding.
“Having my long-time crew chief Frankie with me will make life a little easier but it’s still a massive challenge to jump into such a high-profile team in the world biggest series. I intend to give it my best effort from session one.”
