Britain’s Leon Camier turned down a deal to ride the Ioda MotoGP bike at Le Mans this weekend as he wasn’t able to come to agreeable terms with Aprilia to secure any sort of future for himself.
Camier was supposed to partner Danilo Petrucci in the team all year but the cash-strapped squad weren’t able to deliver the goods, leaving him with no ride for the second time this year before he was thrown a lifeline by BMW Italia World Superbike Evo squad to replace the injured Sylvain Barrier.
The former British Superbike Champion won both races at Imola last weekend, the first by 15 seconds, and says he would rather remain there than leave to go into an uncertain future.
“I wanted the situation to be guaranteed by Aprilia with at least a year’s contract with the factory as I don’t want to be left in this situation again next season,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
“I didn’t take the ride because those assurances weren’t forthcoming. BMW Italia have put a lot of work and effort into me and the bike over the past few races, and we tested very well at Imola after the double win.
“I will concentrate on doing the best job I can for them while Sylvain recuperates from his accident, then I will re-evaluate my situation and begin to look at options again. What I won’t do is rush into anything. I am looking to play the long game and make 2015 as secure as possible.”
Petrucci broke his wrist in a warm-up crash at Jerez and was due to replaced by Luca Scassa but the Italian cracked his femur in a testing crash at Mugello on Tuesday. Ioda have been left with two bikes, one garage and no rider in France this weekend.
