Ducati to start new MotoGP bike design in three months

Ducati will only start to design and build a new MotoGP bike after race chief Gigi Dall’Igna fully understands the existing pros and cons of the current Desmosedici GP14.

The Frank Zappa-alike says he has only built one new bike from the ground up in his career (the Aprilia RSV4) but will commence a new design of bike and engine for Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso in two or three months.

“There was only one time in my life I have made something completely new. The rest was developing something that someone else has designed so this is nothing new for me. It is quite normal for a technician to develop the bike and parts during the season,” said Dall’Igna.

“I think the most important thing is to be calm and quiet and understand the problems and modifications. This is the most important thing. I prefer to move my hands not a lot. I prefer to move my brain first. I don’t want to change something for no reason. I have to be clear what the target is.

“For sure I would like to design a new bike, sooner or later is something I have to do. I think before we do this, it is important to have all the information you need and think about a new concept. But the normal job is to develop, develop, develop the old solution.

“I would like to understand very well the bike and I think I need at least another three months. For sure after that, I will start the design of the new engine and the new bike.”
