Fabio Quartararo blames grip issues for his underwhelming season opener

Gold & Goose

Rear grip issues and front feeling are what Fabio Quartararo has attributed to his poor opening round.

Fabio Quartararo has stated that his underwhelming 2025 MotoGP season opener in Thailand was caused by grip issues.

After a positive pre-season it was expected that Yamaha would make a comeback this season. However, the Japanese manufacturers' year has not started the way that they wanted.

Quartararo was seventh in the Sprint Race but could only manage to finish 15th in the Grand Prix.

"From the beginning we had the issue with the grip, that I was struggling quite a lot to… at the beginning I thought it was to warm up the tyre," Quartararo said.

"But at the end we checked. On the first lap, I could not really push, I couldn’t lean the bike, the bike was just sliding.

"So, I lost a lot of positions and unfortunately I was not able to make a great race and a great pace. Was quite difficult one."

The Frenchman did not find the soft front tyre suitable for his Yamaha M1 during the Buriram Test. Unfortunately, these were the same tyre's that Michelin had at the Thai Grand Prix over the weekend.

"Yeah, it [the soft front] collapses and already I was struggling with the hard, and the rear didn’t help us this race," he added.

"Especially in this race the soft should have helped in the beginning, but it didn’t help."

Quartararo is cautiously optimistic for the Argentine Grand Prix as the rear tyre casing will be different. He is hopeful that it will aid Yamaha's rear grip issues that they suffered in Thailand.

"It’s going to be difficult for us," he said.

"Everything with low grip at the moment is quite complicated, but let’s see with different tyres also. But I think the casing will be same as normal and this will also help us."
