Francesco Bagnaia's British Grand Prix ended with a third place finish after a crash in the Sprint on Saturday.
Before the summer break Francesco Bagnaia regained the lead of the MotoGP Championship. However, after only one race back the Championship has swung back in favour of Jorge Martin.
After qualifying second Bagnaia looked set for another positive weekend. But the Italian crashed out of the Sprint Race on Saturday and had to settle for third place in the main Grand Prix on Sunday.
"I tried, honestly, but after the crash yesterday it was better to finish today," Bagnaia said after finishing third at Silverstone. "Also, I risked a crash today in corner seven, I lost the front and Enea [Bastianini] overtook me. But in that moment I was already struggling a bit, I was trying to follow Jorge [Martin], and to follow Jorge I was taking too many risks.
"It was better to manage the gap to the guys behind and to finish the race, third position is ok but I want to check everything on the data to understand what I did wrong. The potential to fight for a win was there but I just did some mistakes."
It was Bagnaia's team-mate, Enea Bastianini, who ultimately took victory in the British Grand Prix. This win has shot the Italian into title contention, but Bagnaia believes Bastainini was always a Championship contender:
"He was always in the fight, he just needs to be more constant and I think the results can give him more motivation to be always at this level. I think at this track he was just faster, but we will see in the future and I think the Championship will be like this until the last race."
