Honda can't wait until 2027 and 'have to think about next year'

Factory Honda MotoGP Team Boss, Alberto Puig, suggests Honda cannot wait until 2027 to improve.

Alberto Puig, the factory Honda MotoGP Team Boss, believes the Japanese manufacturer cannot wait until the rule changes in 2027 to improve their results.

The 2024 season highlighted the hole that Honda has found itself in when it comes to MotoGP performances. The top rider for the manufacturer was Johann Zarco who scored 75 points for LCR Honda, whereas the factory Repsol Honda riders were the bottom two riders in the standings.

In an interview with Autosport, Puig spoke about whether Honda is going all in on the 2027 major regulation changes.

“Brands will always find a way to make bikes go faster and faster,” Puig said.

“With fewer controls, with fewer devices, it doesn't matter. It's difficult to give an answer to this question right now, but Honda can't wait until 2027 to take a step, and that's why I have to think about next year.”

Honda has seemingly been putting the effort in recent months to improve their MotoGP project. The Japanese manufacturer signed Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami to their test team, as well as Romano Albesiano from Aprilia.

Recently Espargaro, Nakagami and Albesiano were all in Thailand for a private HRC Test.

“The only strategy we've set for ourselves right now is to improve the bike. That's the starting point," stated Puig.

"And to achieve this, Honda is allocating all the resources at its disposal and its technology.

“I'm not just talking about financial resources, but also human resources. That's why we've decided to hire Romano [Albesiano]. The first thing is to improve the bike.

“There's no exact plan, we're doing everything we can day by day because we're aware that our level is not what it should be.”
