This weekend David Alonso could become the 2024 Moto3 World Champion at Motegi.
David Alonso arrives at the Japanese Grand Prix with nine Moto3 Grand Prix victories to his name in 2024. The Colombian rider is the clear Moto3 World Championship leader with a 97-point lead over the competition.
At Motegi this weekend Alonso could be crowned Moto3 World Champion if he extends his advantage to 100 points. However, Alonso has insisted that he will not be thinking about the Championship whilst out on track.
"In Japan, the only numbers I am going to think about are the gears,” Alonso revealed. “I am going to listen a lot to my team and try to stay in a bubble.
“Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’ always tells me that I do not have to prove anything to anyone, that you have to race out of passion and not because you want to prove something. I do not have to rush to do things, that will be my mentality in Japan. I don't want the pressure of the numbers, on track I want to leave them aside.”
Alonso is chasing greatness as he already has a Moto2 contract in his back pocket for 2025. However, the Colombian could also match Joan Mir's record of the most wins in a Moto3 season this weekend with 10.
