'I have been struggling a lot today' - Fabio Quartararo admits to being 'lost' despite securing a Q2 spot

Gold & Goose

Fabio Quartararo was 'a bit lost' during the opening day of Practice at the Indonesian Grand Prix as he struggled with the rear tyre.

In the final moments of the Friday afternoon Practice session, Fabio Quartararo was able to secure himself a spot in Q2 as he jumped up the order to seventh place.

However, the Frenchman admitted that he has been 'struggling a lot' during the opening day of Practice at the Indonesian Grand Prix, and he has been 'lost' when it comes to race pace.

"I don't know if it is in a good way or not, I have been struggling a lot today, to be honest," Quartararo told the media after Friday's Practice at Mandalika.

"It has been a day where we have been a bit lost, but I was able to achieve a lap at the end. So, it is important for the rest of the weekend, but in terms of [race] pace, we are really, really far away."

Quartararo believes the reason behind his slow race pace is due to the rear tyres reacting in an unusual way, which has caused him to ride in a tense way around the Mandalika Circuit.

"I think that the grip is good, but the tyres are reacting in an unpredictable way," he explained.

"This is why my pace has been really slow, and why the pace of many riders who are normally fast has been slow. I have been riding really tense, so I did not feel great, and I think that has been the feeling for many other riders today."

Despite his own struggles during Practice at the Indonesian Grand Prix, Quartararo was left impressed by Miguel Oliveira and Alex Rins, who also secured Q2 spots.

"I think we always see Ducati 1-2-3, and for the first time they are not there, but this does not mean they are suffering," he stated.

"For me, [Fermin] Aldeguer is second, so he is not suffering; the rear tyre is giving confidence to some riders. I think this is what is happening. I think some riders are feeling more than others; I don't think any specific bike is suffering more or less.

"We saw three Yamahas get into Q2 today, but as soon as we started Practice, I did not expect to be in Q2. At the end, Miguel [Oliveira] and Alex [Rins] were also there, so I am impressed."
