Diogo Moreira extended his lead in the Moto2 World Championship at the penultimate round of the season.
The Portuguese Grand Prix was another monumental weekend for Diogo Moreira in the 2025 Moto2 World Championship.
At the penultimate round of the season, the Brazilian rider was able to take victory at Portimao, whilst his title rival, Manuel Gonzalez, ended the race in sixth place.
Moreira now has a 24-point lead in the Moto2 World Championship heading to the season finale next weekend at the Valencian Grand Prix.
"We did a very good job this weekend. The goal was to maintain the flow on the track, that was the key to the race," said a satisfied Diogo Moreira.
"Before the race, I was a little nervous. I think that’s normal, as it’s my first time in this situation. The first few laps after the start were difficult, but in the end, I was able to stay focused. I’m very happy with my race."
At the Portuguese Grand Prix, Moreira was tailing Collin Veijer, but in the latter laps, the Brazilian did not settle for second place and passed Veijer and extended his gap at the front.
"I pushed hard, I wanted to catch him [Veijer]. It was difficult because he was very fast," he explained.
"After I overtook him, I pushed even harder, I wanted to open up a gap. Then, on the last lap, I eased off a bit to stay in front. I wanted to win!"
Despite his massive lead in the Championship heading into the final round of the season, Moreira has revealed that he will not ease off and will fight for victory in Valencia.
"We've done a very good job this season. If I win the championship, it'll be like a gift," he said.
"I want to continue like this and keep winning. I'll push hard in Valencia and fight for the win. I need to stay focused and enjoy it with my team, because it will be my last Moto2 race."
