'It has been the longest season ever... but we never gave up' - Yamaha boss reviews their 2024 MotoGP season

Gold & Goose

Maio Meregalli discussed the difficulties and effort that Yamaha put in during the 2024 MotoGP season.

Once again the 2024 MotoGP season was difficult for the Yamaha MotoGP Team. Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins both struggled last season as neither rider finished inside the top ten in the standings.

After the season concluded Maio Meregalli spoke about the effort that the Japanese manufacturer put in throughout 2024.

"It has been the longest season ever, but I really like the effort that we all put in this season," Meregalli told MotoGP.com.

"We never gave up. Especially after Aragon when we started to see some results of the work that we had done. It is rewarding because when you work hard and you don't see any results things become even more heavy and tough to handle.

"But as I said after Aragon we could see some lines that we could retain, I have to say that the aerodynamic engineers worked well and hard. The riders started to understand how the aerodynamics worked after we did a back-to-back. We went back to the first steps they really understood the benefits of the latest version of the aerodynamics."

Yamaha's rider lineup was one of the talented duos heading into the season, but they both had their issues. The former MotoGP Champion, Quartararo struggled to adapt to the 2024 Yamaha M1 and Rins had injury woes throughout the year.

"Fabio is one of the guys that put in a lot of effort," Meregalli began. He tried to adapt himself, trying to change how you ride a bike is not easy.

"When he [Alex Rins] arrived he was for sure not 100%. Then he had an up-and-down period, then he had a big accident in Assen and broke his wrist. For me, he has never been in a condition where he could push to his 100%. He was starting to get closer, which was very important because we know what he is capable of.

"Being alone and fighting with others who have more riders on the track is a big disadvantage. So, when Alex is in good shape at least we will have two riders with which we can evaluate their information," Meregalli concluded. "This for me will be very important next year when we have four riders, this will give us important benefits."
