'It was necessary to finish a race with good pace' - Acosta returns to the podium after a run of poor form

Gold and Goose

After not scoring any points in Japan or Australia, Pedro Acosta returned to a MotoGP podium in Thailand.

Pedro Acosta arrived in Thailand off the back of difficult weekends in Japan and Australia. The MotoGP rookie had not scored a point across the last two Grand Prix events. However, things got worse for Acosta after he crashed out of the Sprint Race at the Thai Grand Prix.

The Spaniard knew that the Thai Grand Prix was going to be crucial for him to get back on form. However, Acosta was yet to claim a podium in a wet race in MotoGP, but that was about to change. After a long race, Acosta finished in third place after beating his KTM teammates to the final podium position.

"It was long that is for sure," Acosta said. "The first time that I saw the board there were still 16 laps to go, it was like come on! It was a race that I was looking forward to, I tried to be calm and think with my head. I was thinking about the mappings and the evolution of the track and everything. We have to be happy because after not finishing so many races I think that this race was important."

In the opening stages of the race, the Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing rider was struggling with his KTM. Acosta had difficulties with warming his front brake disc and his rear tyre in the treacherous conditions.

"I was struggling a lot to warm the brake discs and the rear tyre," Acosta revealed. "Coming into corners I was like 'oh sh*t, oh sh*t, here I come!' These carbon discs are quite sensitive to the temperature and it was locking the front tyre so I lost the front in turn one. I want to say it was a good race because as well as everything there were many new things for me. I was not making more than 10 or 12 laps on a wet track before this. Anyway, we need to be happy."

'He has exactly the same mentality as me. He was hitting me, and I was hitting him.'

On his way to a return to the podium, Acosta had to battle with his KTM teammates. The Spaniard battled with both Brad Binder and Jack Miller during the Thai Grand Prix. In the end, Acosta took third place away from Miller as the Australian was in the hunt for his first podium in 2024.

Acosta spoke about his battle with Miller saying: "It was super nice my battle with Jack (Miller) at the end. He has exactly the same mentality as me, he was hitting me, and I was hitting him. I was looking over at him as well, it was super nice. Anyway, I am happy with this battle because it had respect and we did not want to make a mess. It was super nice to battle with him and with Brad (Binder)."

Finally, Acosta expressed the importance of having a positive race on Sunday after his recent run of bad form.

"It was necessary to finish a race with good pace. We had a strong pace and we did not make any mistakes, that was the main thing. So, we need to be happy."
