Laverty ‘keen to stay on world stage’ as Bird quits MotoGP

Britain’s Michael Laverty wants to stay on the world stage in 2015 after it was revealed at Indianapolis team boss Paul Bird has put his MotoGP grid slots up for auction with IRTA for a reported €2m and intends to create a MCE British Superbike mega-team next season.

Bird has already offered Laverty a seat in what looks to be a four-man BSB team next season and the Presteigne resident is definitely considering it, along with some other offers he has had in recent days.

“I’ve been riding my backside off for the last two years so I’m keen to remain on the world stage. I’d like to get back to being on the podium again so something competitive would be nice,” said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com this evening.

“Paul is going to concentrate his efforts on British Superbikes with what looks like a four-man team so that would be interesting. I’ve had some interest from Superbike paddocks already but it’s only August. However, it would be nice to get something boxed off nice and early."

After what seemed like 100 16th-place finished this year, Laverty finally got his first points of the season at Indy in a tough race which saw his PBM Aprilia suffer a lot on the long straight but also in the fast changes of direction.

“It was a relief to get those points after we had worked so hard all season. It was a tough race as we were losing tenths on the straight to almost everyone.

“I got past Colin Edwards but then he came straight back at me, I couldn’t hold on to him. I was hoping we could have got 12th or 13th but I am pleased with where we finished.”
