Marc Marquez reflects on his 'super special Sprint victory' at the Red Bull Ring

Gold & Goose

It was a 12th Sprint Race win of the year for Marc Marquez, but it was his first win at the Red Bull Ring in his career.

Marc Marquez returned from the MotoGP summer break with a Sprint Race victory at the Red Bull Ring.

After three weeks off, the Spaniard returned to the Austrian Grand Prix with the same intensity that he showed in the first half of the season.

Marquez topped all three Practice sessions across Friday and Saturday, before making a mistake in Qualifying. At the start of his second run in the 15-minute Qualifying session, Marquez crashed and had to start the Sprint Race from fourth place on the grid.

However, the eight-time World Champion made a good start and managed to settle into second place at the start of the 14-lap Sprint.

Marquez was following his brother, Alex Marquez, and when the #73 made a mistake at the chicane, Marc was able to pounce and take the lead.

Once he gained the lead, Marc Marquez was in control and got into his rhythm and controlled his lead until the chequered flag.

"My mistake in Qualifying penalised me in the race a bit," Marquez said after the Sprint Race.

"I was super concentrated at the start, and then I was able to be in second place. But then, immediately, I realised it would be quite close to stay behind Alex [Marquez].

"I decided to wait a bit, and then when the tyres started to drop and I felt better, I started to push.

"This is a super special Sprint victory, because I want to dedicate it to Pau Alsina. We lost him two or three weeks ago, I don't know what will happen tomorrow, but this race is for him."
