MarcVDS team boss Michael Bartholemy has given himself two weeks to secure additional funding that will see the squad step up to MotoGP and run the factory Honda that is attached to their former Moto2 rider Scott Redding.
The genial Belgian spoke to bikesportnews.com this morning at Silverstone and confirmed he has plans to lease the bike which is currently under Alvaro Bautista at Gresini as the Go&Fun-backed squad look set to switch to Aprilia for 2015.
Bartholemy has received a large financial commitment from team owner Marc Van Der Straten but still needs to find an extra chunk in order to have budget for a complete season. He says he will not make any kind of commitment until the full amount has been secured.
“The situation is that since Brno we know that Fausto (Gresini) is in a little bit of a difficult situation for next year. Some days after this, Honda offer the bike to us as the bike is attached to Scott Redding for the next two years,” said Bartholemy.
“Somehow they have to find a place for this bike to run. For sure, they have talked to the existing teams but it not so easy for them to make this happen so we get a financial offer a week after Brno for the bike.
“I flew down to the Cote d’Azur to talk about the project with Marc, I made a budget and I got a positive answer from Marc because he wants to support Scott as he is still a little bit the team’s baby!
“Marc has given quite a big commitment financially for this project, which is nice for us as it is difficult to find someone to secure that sort of money in a short time but it also means we have not all the budget.
“We can’t forget that we already have a successful Moto2 team and we want to remain at that level. The target is to challenge for the world title for the next years which also costs a big amount of money.
“I have some help but now it is up to us to find the missing amount and then for sure Scott is very welcome back in MarcVDS.”
Only the top 22 teams in the class receive help with freight costs and free tyres from Bridgestone. Anyone else has to stump up the money and aim to get into the elite the following year, but Bartholemy, who is also Redding’s personal manager, says those are the rules made by Dorna and he isn’t expecting special dispenations from ringmaster Carmelo Ezpeleta.
“We are welcome in MotoGP and we can have a place. In the end, there is a rule and the rule made by Dorna, which we have to follow. I can’t say that I am missing €1.9m and that is the fault of Carmelo because I am missing the money.
“The situation is that if I come as a new team to the championship I have to cover my tyres, I have to cover my freight. But if I finish in the top 22 in 2015, and I think with Scott Redding on this bike it will not be a problem, then I will get the same benefit as everyone else.
“We need to find the money and Carmelo has always helped us. He helped us get into Moto2 when all the slots were full. I have a good relationship with him, he is fair, he is a businessman and he treats everyone equally.
“I think that with what I already have, other teams would already sign but I don’t want to have the situation in the middle of next year we will face financial problems. This is what we are doing for the moment, so we know exactly the financial situation. Once this is fixed and we have the money, I will be a happy man and I think Scott Redding too.
“I was honest with Honda as I don’t want to take too much time. So I think we should fix it by Misano otherwise it is coming too late. We have to act now and see what is coming.”
