Moto2 Spain: Aldeguer Finally Delivers With Spanish GP Pole

Gold and Goose

The Moto2 Spanish Grand Prix marks the fourth round of the intermediate class' season this weekend at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto.

Qualifying

Rain was never fully absent from Moto2 qualifying, but the track was mostly dry throughout, even if there were some stubborn wet patches remaining in places from the morning rain. Fermin Aldeguer made the best of the conditions to take his first pole of the year, and the fifth of his career in the Moto2 World Championship, by almost half-a-second.

Albert Arenas was second for Gresini, but his 1:41.111 meant that it was only Aldeguer who was able to lap in under 101 seconds during Q2. Jake Dixon completed the front row.

Mnauel Gonzalez confirmed a solid session for Gresini by qualifying fourth, ahead of Diogo Moreira and current points leader Sergio Garcia who will start his home Grand Prix from sixth.

Celestino Vietti made his customary speed improvement from practice, where he missed the top 14, to qualifying, where he finished seventh, ahead of compatriot Tony Arbolino and Jeremy Alcoba. Marcos Ramirez rounded out the qualifying top 10, ahead of his American Racing teammate Joe Roberts in 11th. Somkiat Chantra joins them on the fourth row.

Alonso Lopez' qualifying was disrupted from his first lap, when he crashed at turn five. He was able to get his bike back to the pits, but unable to lap fast enough for a position better than 16th. Only Ai Ogura, who saved his best for last but ultimately failed to deliver it, and Zonta van den Goorbergh, who crashed out on his first flying lap, finished Q2 behind Lopez.

P2

Sergio Garcia displayed his wet weather abilities in Moto2 P2 at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing fastest on Saturday morning ahead of Tony Arbolino despite a crash.

Arbolino's best lap came on his last one, and bumped Jake Dixon to third, ahead of Ai Ogura on the second MT Helmets MSI Boscoscuro. Alonso Lopez made it three Boscoscuro chassis' in the top five.

Aron Canet fractured his ankle in his P1 crash on Friday afternoon, ruling him out of the rest of the weekend.

The wet conditions meant that nobody was able to improve on their times from P1, and therefore it was Friday afternoon's laps that determined Q1/Q2 seeding.

P1

Joe Roberts was fastest in the first timed Moto2 session of the weekend, beating Fermin Aldeguer by over 0.2 seconds.

Historically, Jerez has not been an outstanding track for Roberts, with a pair of eighth-place finishes (2021 and 2022) his equal-best results at the Spanish circuit before this year.

Aldeguer was at the front of a Boscoscuro 2-3, just ahead of current points leader Sergio Garcia while Marcos Ramirez was fourth on the second American Racing Kalex.

A third Boscoscuro chassis of Ai Ogura was fifth, Alonso Lopez made sure that all Boscoscuros ended day one in Spain inside the top 10, the #21 finishing the day eighth-fastest.

There were improvements for Jake Dixon in the afternoon following an 18th-fastest time in the morning, but he was beaten to a spot in the top 10 by his CFMoto Aspar teammate, Izan Guevara.

Aron Canet is probably the biggest name to miss out on the top 14 overnight. The #44 finished P1 in 20th after crashing at turn eight. He was carried off on a stretcher but was later seen sitting up.

FP1

FP1 was topped by Alonso Lopez, and he and Somkiat Chantra were the only riders to lap in under 1:41 in FP1. But one second from Lopez covered back to 19th-placed Albert Arenas in the opening session of the weekend.

Celestino Vietti was the best-placed of the Pierer Mobility Group riders, who differ from the other Kalex teams this year by using WP suspension, in fourth place, while preseason title favourite Fermin Aldeguer was fifth. Championship leader and Moto2 Grand Prix of the Americas winner Sergio Garcia was eighth, while the sole British rider in the class, Jake Dixon, was 18th.
