Moto2 title hopes over for Sam Lowes

Britain’s Sam Lowes has come to terms with the fact his hopes of a Moto2 title were ended at the hands of Johann Zarco on Sunday at the Silverstone MotoGP round and has backed Alex Rins for the championship.

Lowes was taken out by the reigning champion at Brooklands and scored no points but could take some small comfort that race direction handed the Frenchman a penalty which also put him out of the top 15. An injured Rins managed to finish in seventh and is now only ten points behind.

“He didn’t need to do that move he did. That corner is very hard to pass. There is a load of bumps. Then when he was on the inside he just went out, out, out. I tried to pick the bike up when I saw what he was doing but I was already down,” said Lowes.

“There are six races to go. He’s got a ten-point lead on Rins. I hope Rins beats him to the championship. I’m too far behind. We have six races to go. All I want to do is prove, you know, in the last two races I’ve been the strongest guy. Today I believe 100 per cent in my head that I would have won the race. That’s easy to say afterwards obviously but I’ll come back from this stronger.

“I said before the weekend that if I don’t win here I can’t be world champion. The fact that he didn’t get any points is maybe a bright light at the end. He’s a strange person. You can’t do that. I have nothing to say about him.”

Zarco was bemused by the penalty he was handed and felt it was harsh.

“It was two laps to go to the end and I was in good position, in second position behind Luthi. I knew Sam behind and he overtook me in corner 14. But because it was not many laps to the end I wanted to overtake suddenly after to don’t lose the gap with Luthi. This corner, corner 16, is not easy. When I came in Sam saw me. He tried to resist,” he said.

“We touched one time, and when we touched one time my front brake move up. So it was difficult to brake and we touched a second time and he crashed in this time. So I was sorry for him. Then I tried to save as many points as possible. I really did not expect to get the penalty when I come into the box, but it’s life. Accept like this. I really need to be strong now for the next races.

“It’s the game. We must accept the penalty. I overtook Sam. He saw me and tried to resist but we touched once and after the first contact my front brake went up, so I could not brake more. When we touched second time he crashed. I lose all sort of time because I went straight.”
