Leopard Honda’s Dennis Foggia launched the quickest attack of Saturday morning’s Moto3 free practice at MotorLand Aragón after the usual late session chaos.
Petronas SRT’s Binder was straight out of the blocks as FP3 fired up in Spain. The South African heading the times with a 1’59.666 as the 40 minute session began. Foggia and Andrea Migno were the next to impress, with Romano Fenati shortly behind before the quartet were outpaced once again by Friday’s champion, Deniz Öncü.
Pedro Acosta joined his fellow KTM rider in the top three after 10 minutes on track before Binder returned to the top, his 1’58.943 sitting just 0.014s from Friday’s best. Yuki Kunii became the first rider to succumb to the 5kms layout, at turn three, with Alberto Surra doing likewise at turn nine moments later.
The halfway sage found Binder, Foggia and Öncü retaining control of the session with the Tech3 man still in charge overall. Carlos Tatay improved to sit fourth from Sergio Garcia, Fenati and Acosta with Migno leading Niccolò Antonelli and Kaito Toba in the top 10.
Foggia advanced the overall times as the final 15 minutes arrived with a 1’58.529, the Avintia VR46 rider finding similar form as he too improved to third, his 1’58.999 leaving his sixth in the combined times.
As the final push for Q2 contention fired up, Gabriel Rodrigo took the opening shot, only to be promptly outdone by Guevara, Garcia and Xavier Artigas in quick succession. The GasGas rookie holding court over his teammate with an impressive 1’58.076 effort.
There was a feeling of here to zero for Garcia as the Aspar rider crashed out a turn five, however, with little damage done he was able to pick the bike up and get back to the pits.
The closing few minutes provided the usual frenzy of activity. Guevara and Fenati choosing to set out alone as they pushed to improve further, while the remainder of the pack waited for the perfect tow due to the mammoth back straight of the Aragón circuit.
With riders slowing on the racing line and the ever-present danger of track limits, the one shot wonders were up against it as the flag came out. Öncü waiting until the final seconds before improving on yesterday’s time, claiming second before the final laps registered.
As the standings shuffled, Foggia came out victorious from Guevara and Binder with Rodrigo outmanoeuvring Öncü at the final moment. Garcia, Antonelli and Fellon sat ahead of championship leader Acosta while Migno, Jaume Masia, Artigas, Fenati and Jeramy Alcoba claimed the final automatic promotion places.
