Britain’s Sam Lowes has taken a front-row start for tomorrow’s Moto2 round at the Assen MotoGP meeting, taking third place behind series leader Esteve Rabat and Dominique Aegerter in qualifying this afternoon.
The Speed Up rider held top spot twice during a session that started wet but just couldn’t match the eventual pace of Swiss rider Aegerter, on the Technomag bike, who went quickest with a few minutes left.
But Aegerter was usurped by the MarcVDS bike of Rabat, who topped the sheets with his final lap of 1’37.311 to go just over tenth faster than the Technomag man with Lowes another two-tenths in arrears.
“At the start of the session I didn’t want to make a silly mistake as that would mean back of the grid. It was good at the end because it was dry and we did well. We had good pace in the high 1’37s and it’s nice to be up with these guys,” said Lowes, speaking in parc ferme.
“When I got on the front row in Italy, it was just the one lap where I have been fast in all sessions and I did the work on my own. I feel like I have made a step forward on the bike. Come wet or dry tomorrow, we will see.”
