MotoGP Assen: Stoner questions legality of Ducati's GP11.1

Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner last night called into the question the legality of Ducati using the hybrid GP11.1 MotoGP bike, saying he didn't think it was legal to test 2012 parts over a race weekend.

The Aussie, who won a world championship with the manufacturer in 2007, thinks Ducati have either broken some rules with regarding to testing new parts for next year or have exploited the fact there are no rules governing the Bologna factory's actions.

"If they are using parts this year that are going to be on next year's bike then I am not sure this should be allowed. Sure, the engine will be different but they are testing for next year so we should do the same with Honda," said Stoner.

"We found improvements with ours, if we did the same then it would be great but I don't think we are allowed to do this, maybe it's not correct. If they were developing this year's bike then it's fine but if they're using next year's bike for this year…

"For sure there are some differences and they know the chassis works with the 1000 already so if it also works with the 800 then you've found some development so it's a touchy subject. I don't know how they got around the rules.

"I don't know why we haven't done it, maybe our engine won't fit in the 800 chassis or we're not going to build another chassis that similar. Maybe there will be another development for us later in the season but at the moment, we still haven't reached the full potential of our chassis.

"We've still got more data to gather on the chassis we're using now and if we can find more things, then that will help us with next year. If we continued with next year's chassis this year, then we might miss something."
