MotoGP Austin: Edwards announces retirement

Racing legend Colin Edwards took the opportunity at Austin’s MotoGP press conference today to announce his retirement from competition at the end of this season.

The Texan, who turned 40 in April, said he wants to spend more time with his family and ‘do things like play baseball’ - but he also didn’t rule out still being in a paddock somewhere in the world.

“2014 will be my last year racing motorcycles. I have talked with my wife and I have been in Europe since 1995, and these young bastards have been kicking my ass since then. I’m looking foward to spending more time with my family,” said Edwards.

“This year we started with the testing and didn’t really see an improvement I wanted. Hell, I’m 40 years old and trying to change my riding style to make this bike wasn’t working because as soon as you get into it, your instincts take over and I was changing back.

“I had a few conversations with my wife and kids, and some of the things I miss. We’re getting into baseball and gymnastics and school, and I need to be home a little more.”
