MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta has confirmed that Bridgepoint, the private equity company that owns right-holders Dorna, had made an offer to purchase InFront Sports and Media, the firm that owns the rights to World Superbikes.
The firm wants to buy InFront in its entirety, which means picking up WSB in the process. but Ezpeleta says it won't mean the two series will merge as they are different. Plus WSB chief Paolo Flammini is taking big steps to preserve his series.
"It's true Bridgepoint is our major shareholder, and they presented an offer to acquire the shares of InFront. We are informed by them they are doing that, but we don't know exactly the result. As soon as they have information, they shall of course make sure we are informed. What they are trying to acquire is Infront, the entire company, not just the motorsports part," said Ezpeleta.
"I think it is necessary to have a championship for prototypes and bikes derived from series. And I think this would be the idea, to maintain both championships," he added when asked about a merger of MotoGP and WSB.
