MotoGP Brno: Lowes upbeat despite crash

Britain’s Sam Lowes crashed out of today’s Moto2 race at the Brno MotoGP round but was in reasonable spirits as he believes that up until the spill, he was having a productive weekend.

The Derby-based rider qualified in fourth place and was chasing race leaders and MarcVDS team-mates Esteve Rabat and Mika Kallio when he went down at turn eight, losing the front. He did je-join but was forced to retire with 13 laps to go.

“I made a mistake and lost the front at turn eight. I didn’t have a great feeling on the front right from the start but that’s not an excuse, I was trying not to lose too much time on the top guys,” said Lowes, speaking in pitlane.

“I feel like we have made a massive step this weekend. OK, the race was a disaster and we didn’t get the result we wanted but my team is very positive. We got a good start and they have told me there are some people who will never be in that position.

“I feel we can go to Silverstone and do well. I had hoped my first podium would be today but let’s try and make it at Silverstone.”

Rabat was the runaway winner, leading from lights to flag, which he saw three seconds ahead of Kallio while Sandro Cortese completed the podium, the same distance behind the Finn. Thomas Luthi and Dominique Aegerter rounded out the top five. Britain’s Gino Rea was 26th.
