MotoGP Brno test: Redding still looking for edge grip

Britain’s Scott Redding evaluated new Showa suspension and a prototype front caliper from Nissin at today’s Brno MotoGP test and although he has found time in some areas, he is still lacking edge grip with intitial throttle on corner exit.

The Go&Fun Honda rider, who didn’t ride Bautista’s RC213V today, was happy with the progress but said the laptime didn’t reflect the work that had gone on. He finished with a 1’57.772.

“It was a new caliper they have been designing, which is a first step. For a prototype, you can’t expect too much but I did feel a good chunk better with more smooth control for entry and the power was a little bit less and that’s what I have been struggling with, trying to get the balance of less power but more control,” said Redding, speaking at the track.

“They are going to be working to try and find something more and I think with different combinations of master cylinders we can find something for Silverstone.

“We also tried some new Showa forks today which were quite good and helped with turning and corner entry, and a new shock which helped in braking and a little more edge grip on entry. This has helped in some areas but not the main ones.

“For me at the moment, I am struggling with edge grip on the throttle and this is where I am losing a lot of time. Today, the laptime was not great because I couldn’t get the tyre to work. I am a bit disappointed from that point of view as we didn’t find anything to help that but we have gained time in other areas.”
