Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner says racing the MotoGP 1000cc RC213V next season is going to be more fun as the power enables him to slide the bike through fourth and fifth gear, and he concurs with Jorge Lorenzo that top speeds of nearly 220mph will be possible.
And he went as far as to say the higher top speed of the thousands will be safer than the increased corner speed of the 800s because it means braking earlier so the rate at which turns are entered will be less thus reducing speed in a crash.
Stoner set the fastest lap in yesterday's official test at Brno but was disappointed not to get into the 1'55s bracket. The reasons for this, he says, are they had so much to test with modifications to a new chassis he didn't get the chance and was 'over it' towards the end.
"We've still got some work to do, it was another good shakedown. We found a few positive things and a few we don't believe are the way forward but with the data we have, we can go away and come up with something a little better for the next test at Misano," said the 2007 world champion, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
"We had a few small problems with chatter in the front part of the bike but it's something that shouldn't be too difficult to sort out, we can help that with engine braking and engine management systems. The 1000 is a lot nicer and easier with more grunt and power, and a lot more fun. And it should be more fun.
"With the 800, the power kinda runs out in third or fourth gear and you can't spin the bike unless you're leant over a long way. With the 1000 you can spin the bike all the way through fourth and fifth so it's a lot more fun and more enjoyable, there's a lot more power to play with. You can be a little more patient in corners and accelerate harder out of them plus you don't have to be as fast through the corner as you do with the 800."
Although the 800cc class was brought it to try and limit speeds into corners and improve safety, the evolution of electronics mean they are going through turns faster than the old 990s and Stoner says that having to brake earlier on the thousands next year will mean reduced corner speeds.
"The high speed isn't too much. This was the theory in the past 'too much speed is too dangerous' but this is not the truth. With the 800s it is more dangerous to arrive in the wall than with a one thousand. You have to brake earlier with a higher speed. I think it is definitely not more dangerous. We should be able to arrive at 350kph (217.5mph). We have progressed from where we were with the 990s and feeling the way the power is, we should arrive 350kph or maybe more."
Stoner also tried a chassis that has been modified since the Jerez test and also added the swingarm brought in on the 800 halfway through the season to see what difference it would make to the overall stiffness of the RC213V.
"The chassis we tried is different from Jerez. We found some good and bad points with it so if we can combine the two and work things out a little better then we will be able to solve some of the problem we have had today. Jerez went smoothly but here were struggled a little bit more but we know we have the option to go back to what we had.
"We tried the swingarm we are using on the 800 at the moment, which we put on halfway through the year, and that gave us improvements in some aspects of the bike and it was a little worse in others."
