MotoGP Germany: Binder takes maiden Moto2 win

Brad Binder claimed his first ever Moto2 win holding off Joan Mir and Luca Marini around the Sachsenring.

Fresh off the back of a contract extension with his Red Bull Ajo KTM team, Binder started from the head of the fourth row and topping the mornings warm up session he quickly worked his way forwards to join Mir and Marini in a breakaway group.

Taking the lead with 10 laps to go, sliding under Mir, Binder never surrendered or ever looked like he was going to lose the lead and he eventually held on to the win by 0.779 seconds.

Mir and Marini both managed to stay within a second or two of Binder but never managed to put the South African under serious pressure.

Miguel Oliveira was fourth and closed the gap on World Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia down to just seven points as Bagnaia was caught up in an early Pasini crash. Pasini lost the front end of his Italtrans bike on the final corner of the track and when sliding off took Bagnaia off, forcing the Sky Racing VR46 rider all the way down to 26th position. Bagnaia fought through the field to eventually claim twelfth position and recover what could’ve been a disastrous weekend.

Sam Lowes piped Marcel Schrotter on the final lap to claim fifth position, pushing the German back to sixth at his home Grand Prix. Schrotter’s Dynavolt team-mate, Xavi Vierge was seventh, albeit nine seconds behind the German, heading a group which included Simone Corsi, Fabio Quartararo, Jorge Navarro who rounded out the top ten.

Remy Gardener was eleventh just ahead of Bagnaia and Alex Marquez who had to fight through wrist pain after a Saturday crash. Domi Aegerter was fourteenth with Augusto Fernandez rounding out the point scoring finishers.
