MotoGP Germany: Martin extends Moto3 lead with masterclass

Jorge Martin extended his lead atop the Moto3 World Championship standings with yet another flawless performance, winning the German race from Marco Bezzecchi and John McPhee at the Sachsenring.

Starting from pole position, Martin come into the race two points ahead of Bezzecchi and many had expected the Spaniard to build on his championship lead, however he didn’t have it all his own way.

The short, tight nature of the German circuit meant that at the half way point there was a leading group of 18 riders, however, when tyres started to come into play, Martin started pulling away from the field.

Barring a near scare when his Gresini Honad team-mate, Fabio Di Giannanotino hit the rear end of him going into turn one, Martin never looked overly troubled and in the closing stages pulled away to eventually claim the victory by 2.515 seconds.

Behind Martin, Bezzecchi held off a resurgent McPhee to claim second position by just 0.056 seconds with the Scot happy to forget about his Assen crash and claim his first podium of 2018.

Marcos Ramirez was fourth and just under half a second behind McPhee. Despite pushing late, the Spaniard didn’t have the pace to close the Scot down and had to settle for fourth place.

Aron Canet was fifth and just ahead of compatriot Jaume Masia with KTM duo Jakub Kornfiel and Phillipp Oettl in seventh and eighth position. Raul Fernandez was ninth with Ayumu Sasaki rounding out the top ten.
