With Scott Redding’s arse now confirmed on a factory Honda RC213V and it pointing in the direction of his former Moto2 team MarcVDS, it leaves the spot open that Pramac Ducati were holding for him.
Eugene Laverty is in the frame for that as he has history with Ducati Corse boss Gigi Dall’Igna but it is unclear what machinery they team will be given - and he also has the spectre of Mika Kallio behind him in the race to partner Yonny Hernandez.
Kallio has just been ousted from the MarcVDS team by upstart Alex Marquez and he too has history with Ducati, having ridden for Pramac and the factory in team in 2009 and then Pramac in 2010.
Ducati isn’t Laverty’s only option, however, as he was also in talks with Aspar at Silverstone. The Spanish team have at least one spot available and two if Nicky Hayden’s wrist proves not up to the task, so that is another option for the Irishman, as it is for Leon Camier. And you still can’t discount Jonathan Rea.
As bikesportnews.com reported on Sunday, it looks almost certain he will switch to Kawasaki in World Superbikes but persistent talk in many areas, and some of those reliable, say that LCR Honda’s new sponsor CWM want a two-man British team and Rea does have the so-far-useless HRC patch on his leathers. Would he play second fiddle on a production bike to Cal Crutchlow’s works-spec RC213V? Or would he rather go and win a world title on an almost-MotoGP spec ZX-10R in WSBK?
If that did happen, then Jack Miller would move to Moto2 with Pons.
Chaz Davies, also at Silverstone, is eyeing a return to MotoGP but in 2016 - just in time for the series to switch to his home country of Welsh Wales.
U, Fatso Gresini will announce at Misano he is splitting from Honda after 18 years and will run a brace of Aprilias in 2015 with Marco Melandri and current rider/crasher Alvaro Bautista in the seats. He will also run a KTM Moto3 team.
Dreams of a Lowes twins, er, dream team in Moto2 have been extinguished as Sam can’t get out of his Speed Up contract to move to Caterham and Alex can’t go there either as the team looks like it will be a Moto3-only outfit run out of Malaysia in 2015. Boo.
Sam is not all that HP with his team as he desperately wants to switch from the entirely-too-stiff carbon swingarm to an aluminium one, like wot the rest brung, but it seems they are performing a la-la-la on him. Where Alex will end up in 2015 is unsure...
