Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi likened his start in yesterday’s Indianapolis MotoGP to that of ‘Rocket’ Ron Haslam who was notorious in being able to get off the line ahead of almost anyone during his 500cc career.
The Italian came through from the second row to trail Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso into turn one but took the lead a corner later. His pace wasn’t enough to win and Rossi had to settle for third but was pleased as he hadn’t stood on the Indy podium since 2008.
“I did a fantastic start like Ron Haslam from the past from the second row. Is very important to arrive in front at the first corner and after I enjoy a lot the first lap as I have a quite good pace. I hear that I lose in some places but I was riding quite well and so I try to stay in front,” said Rossi, speaking at the track.
“I know that Marc is a little bit faster for the weekend, so he overtake me, I try to go with him and open the gap a little bit, especially to Jorge. Also Jorge arrive and I want to fight with him but he was stronger than me and have two or three point where he can turn the bike in a better way.
“Anyway, I am satisfied as it is a good third place, I enjoy, I lead the race and battle with Marc and Jorge, which is always a pleasure, and for me this track is one of the worst so to come back on the podium after so many season is good.”
