Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez continued his devastating from Sunday into testing on Monday at Jerez, outpacing Jorge Lorenzo by a quarter of a second to lead the session on a 1’38.737 which was faster than his pace in the race but six-tenths slower than his own pole time.
The reigning MotoGP World Champion said he didn’t have a huge amount of new parts to try but did admit to evaluating new electronics, a rear brake setup and some front geometry settings – some of which worked and some of which didn’t.
“We didn’t test anything special as we didn’t have a lot to try. We tried to a couple of things to improve turning and then some for geometry. We tried something with the electronics, some was better, some worse, we took a lot of information and that is the important thing,” said Marquez, speaking at Jerez.
“I catch up on what I missed in pre-season with my leg. I try some rear brakes and things that is difficult during the weekend to try. These things were to compare whether we have problems in different circuits and try to improve. It was more for the fast corners to try and keep the rear cool.
“I try one thing on the rear that really helped me for turning where this weekend I was struggling a little bit. It was a little bit everything but a setting with the rear suspension, sometimes is was better, sometimes worse but we find some positive points.”
Lorenzo (see separate story) put in a fastest time of 1’38.999 as the track cooled off in the afternoon and he was less than a tenth faster than team-mate Valentino Rossi, who had the younger man’s measure in Sunday’s race. Dani Pedrosa was fourth fastest with Alvaro Bautista rounding out the top five –the Spaniard ompleting a marathon haul of 73 laps as he worked on front forks and rear shocks.
