Factory Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo has topped the third MotoGP free practice timesheet at Mugello this morning after a session-long battle with yesterday's quickest man Marco Simoncelli and the Repsol Honda of Casey Stoner.
Lorenzo put in a 1'48.080 towards the end of the session to take top spot from Simoncelli by three-tenths of a second with Stoner a further three tenths behind.
Ben Spies, on the second Yamaha, grabbed fourth place late on with his 1'49.072, an additional three-tenths in arrears, while Colin Edwards put the satellite Monster Yamaha in fifth place and is only 0.006s behind his fellow Texan.
Andrea Dovizoso is sixth, just ahead of Nicky Hayden who nearly hit a large hare, while Valentino Rossi must now know he has no chance of winning his home grand prix as he is 1.8s off the pace in eighth. Randy De Puniet and Alvaro Bautista round out the top ten. Cal Crutchlow is 11th while Dani Pedrosa is one place behind and more than two second in arrears.
