When the announcement came that MotoGP would switch to a single control ECU in 2016, there was plenty of speculation that Honda would spit their dummies out and balls would be taken home - and if there was a freeze on development of the software then that would have been the case.
However, the control software, which will be supplied by Magneti Marelli, will be allowed to be developed by each team and manufacturer provided their findings are shared with everyone else.
This goes some way towards Honda’s reasoning for competition, in they must be able to develop, work and train in racing, otherwise there is no point.
“It is one thing to have a single software for everybody, frozen, which means nobody can do anything, and this we were against. But the possibility for each manufacturer to keep developing it means we will not have any secret, any advantage in case you find something special,:” said Repsol Honda team principal Livio Suppo.
“Developing technology is key for Honda to develop things and this rule means we can provide suggestions to develop things and share with the others.”
