An early banker lap by Britain’s Danny Kent ensured he bagged a second-row qualifying spot for tomorrow’s Moto3 race at the Sachsenring MotoGP round as brief shower called a halt to proceedings with ten minutes left to run.
Kent, riding the factory Husqvarna, was pushed into fifth place by a late lap from Alexis Masbou who went second behind fastest man Jack Miller but he is equal with Karel Hanika on a 1’27.357, 0.360s behind the Aussie with Alex Marquez in third.
"It was not our best result in a qualifying session this year, but we have prepared the race in the best possible way. I'm happy with how we go into the race tomorrow, very confident and feeling good. The qualifying session was a bit disappointing, because we were not able to complete the whole session and I think I could have gone a little faster," said Kent.
"Also, when I set my fastest time I had to overtake lots of riders. I am satisfied with starting from the second row of the grid and now it's time to prepare for tomorrow. The goal will be to try to get on the podium. We have always been in the top five, and I think we have the pace to have a good race."
The track dried sufficiently with three minutes left but it wasn’t enough for John McPhee who was left mired down in 28th place and it was the same for his Saxoprint team-mate Efren Vasquez who finished in 17th.
Title challenger Romano Fenati, who rides for the Sky VR46 squad, has been suffering with engine problems since this morning and he ended the session in 25th place so has a lot of work to do tomorrow.
