Speed Up’s Sam Lowes did initially top the final Moto2 free practice timesheets out on the Silverstone circuit, but it was not to last and he was pipped to the post in the dying minutes by a handful of riders, including AGR’s Jonas Folger, who set the quickest time during the 45 minute session.
The German rider clocked a 2’07.811 to go quicker than Lowes and Marc VDS Racing’s Esteve Rabat. The Spanish rider was heading the timing-screens, until he ran out of fuel and whilst he was walking his bike back to the pits Folger went three tenths faster, and was the only rider to lap inside the 2’07’s this morning. Vinales and Kallio completed the top four.
The session was red flagged with 37 minutes remaining, after a crash at Village involving Azlan Shah and Tetsuta Nagashima, who was taken to the medical centre to be assessed.
But soon the session was re-started with Luthi and Corsi on the pace and leading the charge. But Kallio was on a hot lap straight out of the pits, and topped the timesheets, after 15 minutes out on track, to go into the 2’08 bracket for the first time this weekend.
But Finnish rider’s reign at the top was not to last as almost immediately, Rabat, Aegerter and Pons went faster. Then Pons lapped a 2’08.423 to soar to the top of the timing-screens, edging Rabat down to second on the sheets.
Lowes did manage to reach the dizzy heights at the top of the sheets, but Rabat went three tenths quicker, than the best lap of 2’08.409 cloaked by Lowes. In the end the Derby based rider ended the session in eighth overall.
AGT’s Gino Rea failed to make it inside the top twenty quickest times, and had to settle for 22nd, with a 2’09.018. Meanwhile fellow Brit, wildcard veteran racer, Jeremy McWilliams came away from the outing with a respectable lap – a 2’16.245 with his Brough Superior Racing team.
