MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has said that if it rains during tomorrow’s MotoGP race like it did in FP4 today at Silverstone, nobody would finish.
A sudden downpour towards the end of FP4 saw the session red flagged and eventually scrapped after Tito Rabat suffered a broken leg and had to be air lifted to hospital for emergency surgery.
The rain came down and sat on the circuit at the Stowe corner rather than draining away causing a lot of riders to aquaplane. Tomorrows race has been moved forwards from 13:00 to 11:30 local time in a bid to beat the heavy rain forecast for the afternoon. Marquez said that should the rain come down like it did in FP4, that nobody would finish the race.
“Should rain like today it’s not possible to run,” said the World Championship points leader.
“In FP4 I came out of the pits and I immediately closed the gas. The problem is that with all the bumps the water stays on the track. Certainly the race direction has the experience to face this situation.
“In the case of rain like in FP4 nobody would finish the race.”
Marquez will start tomorrows race from the middle of the second row in fifth position. The Spaniard said he considered putting on slick tyres, but with the most the loose he was calmed down and elected against the gamble.
“In qualifying we had some really strange conditions,” he said.
“The track was dry, but there were three corners full of water. At one point I thought about putting on slicks, but it was too risky. In these situations you need to be calmer, since I am usually too aggressive.”
When asked what he would like do to with talk of boycotting the race from some riders on the grounds of safety, Marquez said he is always in favour of racing.
“In my mind I keep the idea of running. I am a great lover of racing, but with so much water it will not be possible to race. The problem is that a part of the track dries quickly, while from curve 6 to 8 it remains completely wet,” said Marquez.
