MotoGP Silverstone: ‘I’ve shown I can ride a MotoGP bike’ - Lowes

Britain’s Alex Lowes finished his first ever MotoGP race only 40 seconds behind race winner Maverick Vinales after 19 laps at Silverstone and said he is pleased with his performance given the amount of riding time he had.

The Pata Yamaha World Superbike man, who is testing the R1 at Magny-Cours today before flying to Misano to continue his MotoGP journey, was on a steep learning curve from Friday and had to contend with plenty of different track conditions but acquitted himself well and says he can only learn more.

“I feel I was able to ride at 70 to 75 per cent of how I would ride a World Superbike race when I am aggressive, I know what’s going on, I am in control, I can think about the tyres, I can change lines. So I am quite far away as I was trying to test and understand,” said Lowes, speaking at the track.

“Anyone who was doing their first test on the bike would be the same, having so much to do. I am not saying at Misano I will be 2.5s faster but in terms of feeling comfortable on the bike, there is plenty of room for improvement.

“There has been a lot to take in, I was a bit nervous as it still doesn’t feel like your bike. All I can do at Misano is turn up on Friday, go out in FP1, get a lot of laps in and try to move forward. My goal is to get as close to Pol as I can.

“I think I have shown I can ride a MotoGP bike and I understand where I can improve. My goal next weekend is to improve what I have done here and try to improve the gap to the leaders if I can. I love the bike, I have dreamed of doing this and it is everything I thought it would be.”
