Jorge Martin showed just what he is made of after timing his pole position lap to perfection, denying his Gresini team-mate Fabio Di Giannantonio his maiden Moto3 pole position at Silverstone.
The World Championship challenger still recovering from his broken wrist suffered in Brno appeared to be set to start from the middle of the second row when a rain shower drifted over the circuit half way through the session.
Without hot temperatures the grid appeared to be decided in just 20 minutes, however, with the rain stopping almost instantly and a new surface at Silverstone, the track dried quickly and gave riders just one last chance to improve.
It was an invitation that Martin took with open arms, the Spaniard crossed the line with just thirty seconds to go in the session and then went on to post a 2:13.292, the fastest time of the weekend to claim his seventh pole position of 2018.
Whilst Martin’s time was the fastest of the weekend, Jaume Masia put his Austria heartache behind him to claim second position on the grid, just 0.001 seconds behind Martin’s fastest time with Lorenzo Dalla Porta rounding out the front row just a further 0.020 seconds back.
Albert Arenas was another late riser and the Spaniard will head the second row, just ahead of Di Giannantonio who will have to start from fifth place after seeing his early lap fall short. Tatsuki Suzuki will round out the second row starting from sixth.
Gabi Rodrigo looked as if he was going to start from second position until the final minutes of the session. When out trying to improve upon his lap time the Argentine rider crashed out, leaving him down in seventh, heading the third row. Enea Bastianini will start from eighth with Nico Bulega in ninth.
It was a session of immense frustration for World Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi. Third when the rain came, Bezzecchi found himself just behind Martin on the eventual pole lap and would’ve fancied his chances of slip streaming the Spaniard to the line for the pole position. Unfortunately for the Redox PruestelGP rider he lost the front end of his KTM and crashed out, leaving him to start from down on the fourth row in eleventh position.
