Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner stole top spot from Marco Simoncelli in the second MotoGP free practice session on a drying track at Silverstone this afternoon to go almost a second faster than the Italian with his last lap.
The Italian had set the quickest time with a 2'16.463 with his final circulation, which had demoted Stoner to second, but once again the Australian pulled a lap out of the bag to go fastest with a 2'15.666. Nicky Hayden is third on a 2'17.070 while Cal Crutchlow put his Monster Yamaha in fourth with a last gasp effort of 2'18.109.
Works Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo is the second Yamaha in fifth but a massive three seconds slower than Stoner while Andrea Dovizioso and Ben Spies are both a further tenth in arrears. Karel Abraham bagged eighth fastest, just ahead of Valentino Rossi while Toni Elias rounds out the top ten but is nearly four seconds off the pace.
At some points the track was totally dry while other points had damp patches so there was a lot of movement in and out of the pits to change suspension settings as the surface got drier and drier. Not much else happened, to be fair.
