Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner continues to dominate MotoGP proceedings at Silverstone, setting the quickest time in the final free practice session but he isn't having it his own way as Marco Simoncelli fought him all the way for top spot.
The Australian was forced to put in a final fast lap to snatch back top spot from the Italian right at the end of the 45 minutes, going round in 2'03.487 to put himself a little over two-tenths ahead of the Gresini Honda rider, while factory Yamaha's Ben Spies nudged team-mate Jorge Lorenzo into third with his last lap.
But Marlboro Ducati's Valentino Rossi is in desperate trouble, mired down in 14th place and nearly three seconds off the pace, the best part of a second slower than Colin Edwards, who broke his collarbone only eight days ago.
Britain's Cal Crutchlow is continuing his wet-weather form in the dry, placing fifth and only two tenths slower than his factory counterpart while the second Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso bumped the leading Ducati of Nicky Hayden into seventh place. The American is 1.7s off the pace but quarter of a second ahead of eighth-placed Alvaro Bautista.
