MotoGP Silverstone: Stoner paddles to win; Edwards third

Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner walked away with the MotoGP win at a sopping wet Silverstone this afternoon and a mass of crashes including both works Yamahas and Marco Simoncelli promoted Colin Edwards to a podium spot even with a bust collarbone.

Edwards underwent surgery to repair the bone last weekend and, after trying to ride at Barcelona, found himself third behind Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso when Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies crashed in separate incidents on the same lap and then Simoncelli lobbed it two laps later.

Stoner took one lap to steal the lead from his Italian team-mate as Lorenzo settled into third, Spies fourth and Simoncelli fifth but the Gresini man was soon past the American for fourth and off after his compatriot. They swapped places for a bit before he hit a big puddle going into turn one it was goodnight Vienna.

Lorenzo lobbed it in exactly the same place but two laps earlier while it is believed Spies has injured his back in his fall. Nicky Hayden had a massive moment on the second lap but got it together to take fourth behind Edwards.

Rizla Suzuki's Alvaro Bautista was three seconds further back and able to keep nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi behind him. Karel Abraham occupied seventh with Toni Elias getting his best result of the season in eighth, Loris Capirossi ninth and Hiro Aoyama tenth.
