MotoGP Valencia: Smith upbeat despite being hit by food poisoning

Bradley Smith remains upbeat about his chances this weekend despite being hit with food poisoning just hours before taking to the track at Valencia today.

The Brit, who is still nursing an injured leg, revealed it wasn’t the dodgy limb but more of a dodgy stomach which had hampered his progress in today’s practice sessions for the final MotoGP race of the year.

“The leg is ok but I got food poisoning last night so that’s taken over,” he revealed. “I haven’t been able to eat for the last 24 hours so it’s not been fun.

“I was asleep in between FP1 and FP2, I think I woke up about half an hour before FP2 and was sleeping during my debrief as well so it wasn’t very good. Hopefully I’ll get a bit of food in me tonight and then I’ll be ok. It’s one of those things.”

Smith ended the day 19th while his Monster Yamaha team-mate Pol Espargaro was fourth, and he believes this could bode well for the rest of the weekend.

“We actually did a lot of work today, I was able to try a lot of different things a lot of different bike settings from swinging arms to ride heights to front angles because I didn’t really feel comfortable from the first lap so we kind of just threw everything at it today and had a look.

“I was 12th on the hard tyre just before everyone put the softs in so the ambition of getting to QP 2 looked realistic. I decided to keep my soft tyre for tomorrow morning because that’s what our initial plan was.

“I’m actually quite pleased even though the result was pretty bad, I think Pol was doing low 32s on the hard tyre, Valentino maybe scraped a couple of high 31s but everyone improved a good second-second and a bit on the soft tyre so it looks like the soft tyre can work.”
