Silverstone boss confident of retaining British GP

Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone, has told bikesportnews.com he is hopeful the circuit will be able to retain MotoGP for another year. The yet to be built Circuit of Wales has made a deal with Dorna to hold the British GP for five years, starting from 2015.

But construction on the track has not started yet, which means MotoGP is looking for a British home for next year. The Circuit of Wales has held talks with both Donington and Silverstone, and Phillips hopes for a resolution very soon.

“Negotiations have been taking place since Brno and we are hopeful we are able to retain MotoGP at Silverstone for another year. The interesting thing is that Silverstone is homologated now and it is capable of running the race,” said Phillips, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“Donington are not homologated at the moment they need to do some work on the track but I don’t know what the costs will be for that. In theory we are in a slightly better position, but the costs of running MotoGP at Donington will be less than Silverstone, but we have more grandstands so there is a lot of plus points on both sides. The main thing is that we need to race in the UK in 2015, and we don’t want to see the quality of racing fall back.

“The contract will be between the circuit and the Circuit of Wales, and it won’t be with Dorna, which is the interesting part to it really. We have discussed things with Dorna, but the detailed conversation is with the Circuit of Wales.

"We were hoping we would get a solution to it by the end of the weekend. We are holding the date for MotoGP next year, but we are a very busy circuit, and we have plenty of demand and we can fill it, but we want a solution to it as soon as possible. We want to keep MotoGP, as we want some continuity too.”
