'So far job done, but 19 points is a huge amount' - Bagnaia discusses his slim chance of retaining the title

Gold and Goose

So far in Barcelona, Francesco Bagnaia has been perfect as he has dominated the weekend. However, he still needs a miracle to win the MotoGP title.

Francesco Bagnaia has had a perfect weekend in the Solidarity Grand Prix. The Italian rider was the fastest on Friday afternoon in Practice, set the pace on Saturday, and took pole position.

Bagnaia needed to have a dominant weekend in Barcelona if he wanted to stay in MotoGP title contention. The two-time MotoGP Champion was 24 points behind his rival coming into the season finale.

On Saturday afternoon Bagnaia won the Sprint Race in Barcelona and closed the gap to his title rival, Jorge Martin, from 24 points to 19.

"So far job done, but 19 points is a huge amount," Bagnaia told MotoGP.com. "Against Jorge, it will be difficult to recover 19 points. We will do our maximum and whatever will be will be.

"In any case, I am enjoying the weekend and I am doing my maximum which is what I prefer to do. I have been fast from the first session so this is making me happier, we just need to continue like this."

'We will do our maximum and nothing more.'

After starting from pole position Bagnaia dropped back to third at the first corner. It was the Italian's teammate, Enea Bastainini, who took the lead into the first corner as he shot through the order from eighth to first.

"Honestly, I think he [Bastianini] did the best start ever for Ducati," Bagnaia stated. "He came from the third row to the lead so that is unbelievable. We will absolutely be checking what he did.

"For me in the first corner, it was more that I did not brake as hard. I remember from previous seasons and May that it is tricky on the rear tyre in the first corner. So, I entered a bit slower and they both [Martin and Bastianini] overtook me. It was super important to recover the position back and we did that, so for tomorrow maybe we have to do something similar."

Bagnaia was asked if he would play games on Sunday and try to back up the pack to allow people to fight with Martin. However, the factory Ducati rider is not keen on this idea and wants to ride his own race.

"It could be useless and could put me in the wrong situation. We will do our maximum and nothing more."
