Fabio Quartararo has admitted that his future with Yamaha depends on the competitiveness of the 2026 Yamaha M1.

The 2021 MotoGP World Champion was given his first taste of the 2026 Yamaha M1 with the new V4 engine at the Misano MotoGP Test. However, Quartararo was left underwhelmed by the new bike the Japanese manufacturer supplied him with.

"So far, I don't see any progress in the areas we need,” he said after the Misano Test.

"The top speed is pretty slow. The grip is still not there. We still have a lot of work to do with the electronics. The aerodynamics are more-or-less a copy-and-paste from the Inline Four."

Ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, Quartararo was asked if his comments after the Misano Test were meant to put pressure on Yamaha. According to GPOne.com, the Frenchman said:

"I don't think I need to put a lot of pressure on them, because the bike we’ll be using in 2026 is the one that will decide my future. I think they want to keep me, and they know what they have to do.

"So I'm not pushing too hard. I’m just waiting. Clearly, we're only at the beginning, but I hope they'll provide some updates in the areas where we're struggling the most."

Quartararo has been vocal about the progress that is needed for the 2026 Yamaha M1, and is hoping the Japanese manufacturer will provide the updates he needs to be competitive.
