Jake Dixon has dedicated his Catalunya Moto2 win to the late Paul Bird following the PBM BSB team owner’s sudden passing at the age of 56.
GasGas Aspar’s Dixon romped to his second win of the 2023 Moto2 World Championship season in Spain after stalking and overhauling both Aron Canet and series leader Pedro Acosta at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Rebounding him right back into title contention, while Dixon was delighted with the result, he took a moment to pay tribute to Paul Bird following his death on 1 September [Friday].
“It was a masterclass, wasn’t it? The guy they all say that is the next Marc Marquez, I still out-smarted him in this one,” Dixon began in an interview with the official MotoGP broadcast feed.
“That was so, so sweet but this one is for Paul Bird, who passed away, the whole PBM team, his kids, family… that was for you, mate.
“It is such a big loss, he was a big character in the sport, love to you all, what an incredible win to dedicate to him.”
Though Dixon never competed under Paul Bird, he did take on his PBM squad in the British Superbike Championship en route to the 2018 BSB runners-up spot.
