Augusto Fernandez completed his second wildcard performance on Yamaha's new V4-powered M1.
For the second time this season, Augusto Fernandez, with the Yamaha Factory Racing squad, on the V4-powered Yamaha M1.
The Spaniard has been working hard developing the new V4 engine for the Yamaha M1, which is supposed to make its full-time debut in MotoGP next season.
However, the two wildcard appearances that Fernandez has done with the new engine have been disappointing for the Japanese manufacturer.
Fernandez had a disappointing weekend at the Malaysian Grand Prix as he qualified last on the grid in 23rd place, finished 19th in the Sprint Race, and then 18th in the main Grand Prix.
In the Sprint Race, Fernandez was 7.691 seconds behind the next Yamaha rider, Alex Rins, who was in 15th place. It was a similar story in the Grand Prix as he was 21.859 seconds behind Jack Miller, who was in 14th place.
"Difficult weekend for us," said Fernandez.
"We started the weekend worse than how we finished in Misano, so it felt like we had to start again, discovering what we needed to find the base again.
"The positive thing is that with all the work we've done, we are now at the same point as how we finished the race in Misano.
"So I'm struggling at the same point, and the guys, after analysing all the data during all the weekend, we had the same problems in Misano.
"We can say that the positive is only this, because we have a clear direction to follow at least for the next test and the next race in Valencia.
"But we need pieces, we need something else. Because we did everything we could with what we have, [setting] wise.
"So at least we have a direction to take, but we need the engineers now to work on new things and follow this direction."
